The Independent Instructor's Guide to Liability Insurance

Insurance is the least sexy part of teaching yoga, but it is the only thing standing between you and bankruptcy if a student gets injured. Here is your crash course.

The "Big Two" Policies

You need two types of coverage, often bundled together:

  1. General Liability (GL): This covers "slip and fall" accidents. If a student trips over a yoga block and breaks their wrist, GL pays.
  2. Professional Liability (PL): Also called "Malpractice." This covers your instruction. If a student claims you adjusted them too hard and caused a herniated disc, PL pays.

What is "Additional Insured"?

When you rent a studio, the owner will ask to be named as "Additional Insured" on your policy. This effectively extends your coverage to them for the time you are in their space.

Good News: Most policies (like beYogi or PHLY) allow you to add unlimited Additional Insureds for free.

Better News: Studio Planner handles this exchange automatically. When you upload your COI to our platform, we verify it and grant you access to book. No email tag required.
